The Loveless Love Artist: Sam Smith tops the charts in 2014

By Randee May, Staff Writer Sam Smith once again steals the hearts of fans all across the world as his newest album; “In the Lonely Hour” was released in the UK the USA this year.

His songs are perfect for both genders, whether it is a love song to sing to your significant other, the song you play at your wedding or you’re just feeling a little emotional; there’s something for everyone.

While Smith has managed to fill his listeners with a feeling of love, this artist has never received the love his music expresses.

“In the Lonely Hour, is all about unrequited love,” Smith said. The album contains popular songs such as “Stay with Me,” “I’m Not the Only One,” and “Money on My Mind.”

In just a short time, he has earned Grammy award nominations for Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal, and People’s Choice Award for Favorite Album.

Sam Smith has unrequited love and the album itself is to be love letter for the man that didn’t return that feeling of love.

In an interview with Digital Spy he stated, “My debut album is just a diary from a lonely 21-year-old. That’s what it is. It was my way of talking about the only real issue in my life.”

Perhaps it is his rawness that is so appealing to fans. “I don’t have that many sad things going on in my life and it was the only thing that was really affecting me last year: I fell in love with someone who didn’t love me back, and it made me get into this head space of, ‘Will I find a man to love? When will I find love?’”

He claims that it’s his way of defining what love is, and how unrequited love is just as painful, just as powerful, as what we call ‘normal’ love.

The album successfully captures what Smith wanted to deliver.

Even the songs on the deluxe album stick to the pattern of love and lack thereof, including the track with Naughty Boy, “La La La”.

With love songs becoming ever so popular, Sam Smith miraculously keeps his listeners hooked without putting them off. Smith may be a man who has never experienced the true feeling of love, but his songs have inspired millions.
