Black Greek Organizations Looking for Interested Students

By Gabriel Williams, Staff Writer

The black Greek organizations of Georgia Southern University were open to questions after hosting their panel discussion for new and interested students last week on the Armstrong Campus.

The event was a joint-collaborative effort between the office of the Fraternity and Sorority life (OFSL) and the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA).

Along with clubs and student activities, Greek life is one of many aspects of college that excites students. Representatives from all seven black Greek organizations provided students with a brief overview of their organizations as well as historical data.

With the growing issue of hazing among Greek life, GSU policies are very explicit on the details concerning student and Greek organization conduct. Francisco Lugo, director of the OFSL, had this to say about Georgia Southern’s hazing policies.

“We are enforcing the hazing policy very strictly.”

Sigma Gamma has done service projects such as Operations Big Book Bag, Act against

Aids and March for Babies in the past and plans to do more in the future. Most fraternities and sororities do projects for their respective groups, so being a part of that can provide an outlet to community service as well as for making new friends.

Stephanie Molina, Coordinator of OMA, ended the event with a panel discussion, and opened the floor to the representatives for responses.

Audience members were also given a chance to ask questions though an anonymous Google number. In response to the audience’s questions, the hosts offered advice on the do’s and don’ts for new members joining a Greek organization, on balancing classes and also on being successful in a Greek organization.

Danielle Cohen, a senior Sonography major, said, “I enjoyed the session and hope to be a part of a sorority one day.”

It is imperative that students get involved with student activities and organizations to make the best out of their collegiate experience. Not only will students be exposed to great things, but they will also enhance their interpersonal skills, which is essential in preparing for the real world.

There will be tons of great opportunities for students to be a part of Greek life. Stay tuned to theinkwellonline.com for a full list of events.
